An in-depth look at the sound and audio in BF4 from developer DICE.

DICE recently posted some interesting information about the sound design in Battlefield 4. Sound and audio has always been just as important and just as good in Battlefield games as the impressive visuals. And with Battlefield 4, the DICE team worked even harder to represent a realistic sound environment.
They’ve improved sound in Battlefield 4 to make things even more realistic. For example, players will hear water drop on their helmets when it’s raining outside or from water sprinklers. Each of the 10 Battlefield 4 maps have their own distinct sound and tone as well, based on the environment.
The sound is so important and vast in the Battlefield series, that DICE has over a million sound files in their library. And each of the sounds can vary, depending on how close the player is to the source. For example, a gun fired sounds different close up compared to a hundred yards away.
Voiceover is another big element in Battlefield 4. Aside from the singleplayer characters (featuring actors Micheal K Williams and Andrew Lawrence), the multiplayer voiceovers have improved as well. For example, when a teammate shouts “grenade!”, it’s hectic, compared to when they are giving you a medpack, which is calmer VO, and so on. The Commander has his own voiceover as well, which isn’t as hectic as the soldiers in battle, but is still urgent.
DICE has even released a video showing the extent they go to when it comes to sound: the video shows the DICE audio team recording boat sounds (from the RCB boat) for the game. Since attack boats and new in the game, they had to record them all for the first time, from various angles and at various distances.
