No you dont, but its really hard to start a clan when you dont have your own server

You don't need ESEA at all. But ESEA is a good way to get into competitive CS:S, CS 1.6 and Team Fortress 2.

And you don't need your own server either. But you pay for them monthly. Price depends on who you rent from.
