In southern societies in the 1800’s, it was very rare to find a person who was completely straightforward and direct in their speech and was able tell it like it was. People tended to hide the bitter reality of racism with lies that would comfort themselves because they refused to believe that any part of their way of life was flawed. However, not everyone was so ignorant and myopic. Mark Twain, an author during this time, was one of the few who could see through the nostalgia in the South. In Twains novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, he wrote in a style, which raised many eyebrows. The style consisted of creating a truthful imagination of typical southern life by taking a lower middle class viewpoint, using the dialects and customs of the South to influence the writing, and portraying the characters of the story with flaws. This included satire to criticize the South, and developing characters as neither good nor evil, instead, making immoral or moral decisions. This writing style soon became known as literary realism, and Mark Twain became the most notorious realistic author.
