Ubisoft has officially launched Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, a competitive turn-based RPG featuring Web3 functionality. Initially announced in June 2023, many anticipated that Ubisoft would postpone or cancel the project due to the declining support for blockchain-based games and NFTs.

The NFT market gained significant traction in 2020, leading to the integration of non-fungible tokens into video games. In 2021, Ubisoft introduced Ubisoft Quartz, an initiative aimed at transforming in-game cosmetics into collectible NFTs with real monetary value. However, the NFT market began to collapse in early 2022, with estimates suggesting that 95% of all sold NFTs currently hold no monetary worth. Consequently, Ubisoft Quartz faltered, reportedly generating only around $400 in total. Despite this history, Ubisoft launched its new game for PC last week, leaving the gaming community puzzled.

Years after the demise of Quartz, Ubisoft has rolled out Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles for PC. This free-to-play, blockchain-based RPG tasks players with assembling teams of three characters to engage in turn-based battles against various foes. Players can acquire character figurines using in-game currency or cryptocurrency, and a valid blockchain wallet is required to link to their accounts. According to IGN, the highest-priced figurine currently listed on the game's marketplace is nearly $63,000, while the most affordable heroes start at around $7.

While players receive temporary characters upon signing up, they will eventually need to purchase additional ones. Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles lacks a campaign or PvE mode, making it solely a PvP experience that heavily relies on the in-game NFT marketplace, which raises concerns about becoming pay-to-win. The RPG is exclusively available for download on Ubisoft's website, as many platforms, including Steam, have banned cryptocurrency and NFTs. Fans of Ubisoft have voiced confusion over this new blockchain title, especially as other developers like Sega and EA have ceased their NFT efforts.

Ubisoft has faced significant challenges in recent months, initiating an internal review of its practices in September. Originally scheduled for release in November 2024, Assassin's Creed Shadows has been delayed until February 2025, while rumors suggest that Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter XDefiant may soon shut down. Additionally, Star Wars Outlaws failed to meet sales expectations following its August launch. The future of Ubisoft appears uncertain, with many fans believing that releasing a blockchain game in 2024 represents a misguided direction for the company.
