City of Heroes spiritual successor The Phoenix Project will take to Kickstarter in September.
Polygon reports the fan-developed effort will open its crowdfunding doors on September 8.
In the meantime, Epic Games has been kind enough to allow the team to use Unreal Engine for free, with licensing fees due if the Kickstarter campaign is successful.
136 volunteers are working on the project at present under the name Missing Worlds Media. The MMO is said to be at most one third complete, with 20% of the code in place. It may release in 2015.
City of Heroes shuttered last year despite fan and developer campaigns to save the unique and beloved MMO.
