Take-Two Interactive has sold its indie publishing label, Private Division, although the new owner has yet to be disclosed. As the gaming industry faces frequent layoffs and studio closures, large companies, including Take-Two, have been grappling with restructuring and budget cuts to streamline projects. By selling Private Division to an entity possibly better positioned to support its projects, Take-Two may have sidestepped further layoffs within the company.

Amidst Take-Two's recent studio shutdowns, including Roll7 and Intercept Games, selling Private Division marks a notable shift in its strategy. Despite Take-Two’s market success with major franchises, the pressures of high operational costs appear to have prompted this divestment. As reported in Take-Two’s fiscal 2025 Q2 earnings, CEO Strauss Zelnick disclosed that the deal includes nearly all of Private Division’s projects, including in-development titles, although the Early Access game No Rest for the Wicked will continue receiving Take-Two's support for the time being.

This move aligns with earlier industry speculation, including reporting from IGN’s Rebekah Valentine in May 2024, who suggested that Take-Two might be “quietly killing” Private Division amid ongoing layoffs. At that time, there were rumors that Take-Two was seeking a buyer for Private Division, which has built a reputation for publishing acclaimed indie titles like The Outer Worlds, Hades, and Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game. While the sale alleviates concerns about the label’s closure, it remains to be seen how the new management will impact its operations.

With its new ownership, Private Division retains its brand and will continue developing upcoming projects, such as Project Bloom, a collaboration with Pokémon developer Game Freak. Now separated from Take-Two’s extensive resources, Private Division may face new challenges but could find renewed focus and growth opportunities under a different corporate structure.
