Nintendo on Tuesday will release a new update for Super Smash Bros. 3DS that enables support for the company's NFC-powered Amiibo toys, the company confirmed in a statement to NintendoLife.
The update, which will be free, arrives just days before the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS. The system will be released across North America and Europe on February 13.
The 'New Nintendo 3DS' is the latest variant of the popular handheld gaming system, which includes built-in NFC technology. This means users can simply place their Amiibo toy onto the system to "warp" it into the virtual world.
Nintendo also plans to release a peripheral for the existing 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS models allowing those devices to sync up with Amiibo toys. However, Nintendo has not announced an official launch date or price for the add-on.

Amiibo support has been available for Super Smash Bros. Wii U since November 2014. For more on how the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. makes use of Amiibo toys, check out the video below.
Nintendo has sold around 5.7 million Amiibo toys worldwide to date. By comparison, Activision has sold more than 240 million Skylanders toys so far, though the Call of Duty publisher's line of toys have been around much longer than Nintendo's have.
