Before the launch of the PS4 last Friday, we speculated as to just how many Sony would sell before the Xbox One launches this coming Friday. Demand was certainly expected to be high, but I doubt anyone thought Sony would manage to sell a million consoles in the first 24 hours.
That works out to just over 11 consoles being purchased every single second, and Sony’s management probably opening a few bottles of the good stuff to celebrate. Since then we’ve heard about hardware issues and faulty consoles, but Sony has claimed the failure rate is as low as 0.4%.
If Sony can continue to fulfill orders, there’s every chance they could double that total by Friday. It also seems likely the estimated 3 million sold by the end of 2013 is quite conservative, especially when you consider Sony has yet to launch the machine across Europe. We could see another million in a day sales when that happens later this month.
A lot will now depend on just how much bad press Sony gets about console failure rates. But Microsoft also has a key role to play. If the launch of the Xbox One goes smoothly, there’s no issues with the hardware, and demand can be met, then Microsoft could steal more than a few sales away from Sony if gamers are worried about reliability.
If you picked up a PS4 on launch day or over the weekend we’d like to know how things are going. Was it bricked out the box? Did you experience crashes, overheating, or the pulsing blue light? Or has it been a problem-free weekend full of gaming?
