The drawing and doodling app Paper has been a big hit on the iPad, but now the company behind this artistic experience is adding something new to the mix — Pencil. No, not the kind you need to fill in a multiple choice test. Pencil is a stylus that has been designed to integrate with Paper. It’s also quite cool looking.
Pencil is basically a capacitive stylus with a lot more going on behind the scenes. This device has a rechargeable battery good for a month of use and pairs with the iPad over Bluetooth. However, all you have to do to make it connect is open Paper and tap the screen. From there, the stylus connects and enables a bunch of fancy Paper-only features.
Paper has all different kinds of writing and drawing tools, and you can attach any of them to the Pencil. The app also knows the difference between the tip and the opposite end, which is used as an eraser. When the app is using this special stylus, it also knows to ignore your palm resting on the screen. However, if you rub the screen with a finger, the app interprets that as a blend command — just like drawing in real life. All these features are restricted to the Paper app, though. Outside Paper, the Pencil can still be used as a regular capacitive stylus.
Pencil is available in brushed aluminum (graphite) for $49.95 and walnut (real wood) for $59.95. The Paper app is free to try, but all the tools are bought in packs as in-app upgrades. Using a Pencil gives you free access to Sketch, Outline, Write, Color, and Mixer tools. Although, it’s not entirely clear if this is a limited trial period. The price of Pencil is, however, a limited time offer. It should ship to the US and Canada in 2-3 weeks.
