GameStop customers in Germany should be aware that the retailer is planning to leave the country permanently in the near future. This marks another step in the company’s ongoing reduction of its EU presence, following numerous store closures and sales across the continent.

The past several years have been difficult for GameStop. The retailer faced ups and downs throughout the 2010s, but in 2019, it reported a significant net loss. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 worsened the situation, forcing many stores to shut down for an extended period. In 2023, GameStop exited Ireland entirely, closing all stores and even shutting down its Irish website.

Now, the company is facing a similar exit from Germany. According to Gameswirtschaft, the number of GameStop retail locations in the country has already decreased from 200 to around 70. However, these remaining stores will be shut down "as early as January 31, 2025." While there is no confirmed date for the closures, it is clear that they will likely happen after the holiday season. It is unclear at this time whether the online component of GameStop’s business in Germany will also be affected.

Currently, GameStop is still accepting online pre-orders for games scheduled to release in February or later, but these orders may face cancellations. It's also uncertain whether all pre-orders made before that date will be honored. This raises the possibility that GameStop may continue selling games online to German customers, though this remains to be seen.

The company’s shutdown in Germany is expected to lead to the loss of approximately 500 jobs. GameStop has already been scaling back in the EU, with the only remaining directly owned stores in France and Germany. Recently, its Italian branches were sold to a third-party, which will be rebranding the stores, and similar changes have occurred in Switzerland.

As internet speeds improve and digital game purchases become more prevalent, fewer gamers are visiting physical stores. This shift has resulted in declining foot traffic at brick-and-mortar game shops, and even online stores are seeing reduced sales of physical copies. While GameStop has tried diversifying by selling collectibles, retro games, and Pokémon cards, it remains uncertain if these efforts will be enough to sustain the company as the gaming industry continues to evolve.
