Next-gen has arrived with the Sony PlayStation 4. And with that, the next generation of Call of Duty has also arrived. Call of Duty: Ghosts is out now for the PS4, which is out in North America (Coming to Europe/Latin America on Nov. 29th). We’ve been playing Ghosts on PS4 since launch, and thus far the next-gen experience has been great.
Graphics
The biggest difference from current-gen to next-gen is of course the graphics. Everything just looks better on the PS4 version. The lighting, textures, guns, buildings, etc. It all looks better. The PS4 version of Ghosts runs natively at 1080p, and the graphics are some of the best we’ve ever seen for a Call of Duty game.
The game runs at 60FPS, as it does on all platforms, but as other reviewers reported, yes the game does have some frame rate issues. Nothing game changing or significant that it would interfere with your experience, but it does happen a couple of times in the campaign and multiplayer. The drops normally occur if it’s an extremely hectic moment. We haven’t experienced any drops in Extinction.
Maps and Modes
Ghosts has the same maps as current-gen, but since Ground War is on the PS4 version of Call of Duty: Ghosts, the maps make sense. The map size are perfect for Ground War. Especially Stonehaven. With Ground War, the game fees like Call of Duty. The action keeps happening.
Another issue we thought that might happen would be limited players in playlists, but that’s not the case. The player count has peaked to over 36,000 players total, which is actually more than the PC players of Ghosts. There’s someone in every playlist.
Controls wise, Infinity Ward didn’t make much use of the DualShock 4 touchpad. As you can see in the image above, it’s only there to act like the select button from previous games. (And for some reason, they’ve done the same on Xbox One: they didn’t make use of the haptic feedback on the triggers.)
Call of Duty: Ghosts definitely looks amazing on the PlayStation 4. The graphics are much improved over any other Call of Duty game before it. If you plan on buying a PS4, Ghosts is must have game for the next-generation console. If you’re on PS3, there are plenty of options to upgrade the game for just $10 to the PS4 version.
