Kickstarter backers have fully funded Alice: Otherlands to the tune of $222,377.
The campaign aimed to raise $200,000 allowing American McGee’s Shanghai studio Spicy Horse to purchase partial film rights to his version of the famous character.
Hong Kong director Tsui Hark has signed onto the Alice: Otherlands project.
Some of the money will be used to outsource shorts or even a feature length film, overseen by McGee and his team but not directly produced by the game developer.
If the campaign had been unsuccessful the rights would have gone on general sale, likely keeping them out of McGee’s hands indefinitely.
Spicy Horse had originally included the project as a stretch goal of its OZombie Kickstarter, but cancelled the campaign after it failed to sufficiently gel with backers.
McGee is also aggressively chasing the game rights to Alice.
