First off i will start by saying i prefer smoking pot ::blunt

After that remark, i would like this thread for the most part to remain serious, and open minded.

The words "Melting pot" are a metaphor for the combination of many different peoples in one society. This is used mostly in describing the United States because we as a nation are absolutely packed with many different peoples. Peoples as in different social groups(Sexual Orientation, Political Parties, etc), different religious groups(Islam, Judaism, Christianity, etc), as well as different racial groups(Black, White, Mexican, Chinese, etc). A mixture of hugely different ideas in very large portions.

I have two questions for you all.

Is having a melting pot a good or bad thing?
Is having a melting pot successful or a failure?

I will give my opinion after a few people give theirs, as i don't want my opinion to bias you all. :Cave:

This.

Anyways, I believe that a melting pot is indeed a good idea because it can expand the knowledge, strength, and unity of the people in said melting pot. However, on the flipside, if everyone stays closed-minded (is that a word?), it can be a disaster because people will argue and try to prove that their one idea, belief, etc. is better than everyone else's. Likewise, other people will try to prove that they instead are the best.

In my experience in this melting pot we call the United (yet ironicly disassociated) States, I believe I have been made a better person by listening to other people's experiences, stories, beliefs, traditions, ideas, foods, etc. I have realized that not a single person living here can say that they are better than anyone, because no one person here can say that they are their own entity with no outside nurturing. Somehow, someway, the different cultures of the world have already melded together; we all survive as a result of everyone in the world coming together and expanding our resources to understand the world in new ways.

I too, also like smoking marijuana. I also enjoy doing psychoactive substances (shrooms, lysergic acid diethylamide), simply because they have expanded my mind and have allowed me to see the world in a whole new way. For those that will judge me for this: have you smoked or tried these? If not, how can you judge something or someone before knowing how it affects me or you?

I like what you said about psychoactive substances allowing you to see things in a broader view. I couldn't agree more with that.

Anyways, i think a melting pot is similar to communism in that they both sound rather good on paper, but are not at all successful in the practice. I agree with blok on how he said other peoples experiances have helped him to better himself, but i think it doesn't help our nation. It is impossible to unite if there are many different peoples. To many conflicts will occur, to many differences.

Melting pot all the way!

Immigrants are asked to adopt the American way of life, before they are granted citizenship into "America".

In Canada it is called "Cultural Mosaic" Where bringing your cultural beliefs into Canada is encouraged. This has caused great debate with "natural born Canadians".

Alot of our customs and Rights as Canadians are being challenged and changed to suit these "New Canadians" because they find them offensive. Simple Sayings such as "Merry Christmas" are being changed to "Happy holidays" to suit these ppl. Bullshit....

Melting pot all the way... If you dont want to change your ways to the country you are moving to... Stay in your own country! Do you think there country would change for you, if you moved there?? Ha, Highly doubt it, You would simply disappear and never be found... If you pushed it.

Now im not against multi culturism , I think ppl from other country's have full rights to do as they wish with there heritage. As long as it follows the laws that apply to all the rest of us

Me neither, however i do think that cultures need to have separate societies. And that these societies need to be accepting that there are different, separate cultures out there with their own priorities.

A melting pot is definitely a positive thing, simply because it reflects the greater world around us. This idea of living in one society of one race is what creates nationalism, racism and ultimately war. As for it's success or failure? That's too black or white to answer...each community within a city has it's own successes and failures...The best thing is to avoid a ministry of war!

Toronto has a 48% visible minority, which is crazy for a city of its size

In my original post i mention the importance of being open-minded. Meaning if each seperate society was open minded about allowing other societies to prosper, then i think the world would be better without the mixture of people.
