It says a great deal about a game when, years later — even after the company has been dissolved (albeit, suspiciously) — people just can’t pry themselves away from it. The original*BioShock, released in 2007, remains on everyone’s minds to this day, with fan art continually flooding the internet, the game’s now legendary underwater city Rapture being recalled in games media on an almost regular basis, and fans giving the game their own modern polish. YouTube user noodlespagoodle managed to grab some assets from the original game, and place them into Unreal Engine 4, giving us a rough impression of what the game would look like had it been made using the latest technology.
Though*BioShock Infinite’s*two-part campaign DLC,*Burial at Sea, was only released within the past handful of months — and thus, uses modern technology — it did not use Unreal Engine 4. Instead, it used a modified version of UE3. The episodic return to Rapture looks amazing (and though short, plays amazingly as well), but with Unreal Engine 4, the underwater dystopia could look even better.
Obviously, the above video doesn’t depict a complete, modern remake of the seven-year-old*BioShock. Though the original game’s very specific atmosphere is a little off, and though the demo wasn’t exactly polished to a pristine shine, the game does look quite good. Mainly, the individual assets look great for a plug-and-play upgrade, and the lighting bouncing off the Big Daddy’s iconic diving suit is nothing short of impressive. The glass windows contorting the shapes of everything on the opposite side also helps promote Rapture’s twisted and claustrophobic feel.
Irrational Games is gone, Ken Levine has moved onto smaller projects, and 2K is left with*BioShock. That doesn’t mean the franchise is done, and 2K did a much better job with*BioShock 2 than the credit they receive, so it’s possible that we’ll get some sort of full remake somewhere down the line, and can experience the first foray into Rapture all over again — this time with an updated engine.
