There are no games more important to the future of the Xbox One right now than Titanfall, and everyone knows it. The Beta this past weekend showed that the game is capable of delivering a compelling experience, but what’s the plan for keeping users at their controllers for months and months? It looks like Respawn is taking one more page from the Call of Duty playbook and encouraging extended play through the “Regeneration” system.
Since the first videos came out, Titanfall has received a fair bit of criticism for appearing to play like Call of Duty. The rapid pace of gameplay on the ground between pilots can feel similar to shooters that you know and love, but the game features so many other important distractions and deviations that there’s no way class them as the same.
After all, giant robots and parkour enhanced by jetpacks isn’t exactly standard military gear yet. Still, the parallels are there, and Regeneration adds fuel to the fire by adding a sci-fi spin on an existing game mechanic.
Titan pilots are still human, and after countless battles that involve stressing your body to its max there’s a good chance those who survive to level 50 rank won’t be as spry and lethal as they were at level 20. The Regernaration system from a plot perspective allows the pilot to endure a physical overhaul, which wipes the mind of skills they have earned on the battlefield combined with a totally refreshed body.
According to RazorUK posting on NeoGAF, who discovered the Regeneration system while fiddling with the game code, there will be 10 regenerations that your pilot can experience. Like the Prestige system in CoD, each Generation pilot starts over when they hit that mark, but can now earn experience faster than before.
It certainly sounds an awful lot like Prestige, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Titanfall has proven itself a compelling game with only two maps and three gameplay types. As long as Respawn is able to keep things interesting when the game actually launches there will be plenty of pilots eager to reach their first regeneration.
