Sony has made some more information available on its upcoming PlayStation Now game streaming service. The company announced its new line of Bravia 4K Ultra HD TVs recently, and revealed PS3 games will be playable on the devices via PlayStation Now. All you have to do is pair a DualShock 3 with the TV and rent a game to start playing.
The company is going for the more is more approach with its 4K UHD TV offerings. There are three new series occupying a variety of price points with nine TV sets in total. Expected to hit stores in June, the sets will range in price from $2,100 to a whopping $25,000. The cheapest model is still an impressive 49-inch 4K screen, which will probably look pretty awesome. The most expensive model is a fully featured 85-inch screen. That’s essentially a wall of video.
PlayStation Now is still in testing, so the list of supported games at launch isn’t officially known. However, there are some reasonably solid leaks. Fan favorites like Dead or Alive 5, Payday: The Heist, and*Shadow of the Colossus**are all expected to make an appearance. Games such as The Last of Us and Killzone 3 have also been demoed and talked about in the past.*Pricing is expected to be $5-6 for a rental, but it’s not clear what length of time that gets you. A previous screw-up by Sony might have tipped 1, 7, and 30 day rental periods in the PS Store.
Load times are rumored to be quite a bit longer when playing games on a remote server — some sites allege games might take almost a minute to load on PlayStation Now. Supposedly the loading issues are being improved during the beta. Although, a certain amount of inconvenience is probably necessary for a service that can run on TVs as well as powerful game consoles like the PS4.
Sony’s Gaikai-based streaming service is expected to be out of beta sometime this summer, shortly after the new UHD TVs are on sale. You might want to start saving up now.
