Sony’s presentation at GDC next month may include a bold new accessory that will open the door to a whole new world of console gaming. The Oculus Rift competitor from Sony is almost here, with a host of games right behind it.
Few things in the gaming world have caused as many waves as the Oculus Rift. Despite still not existing as a publicly available product, the developer kit for Oculus Rift has inspired a whole new class of game modifications. Support for every kind of game, from FPS titles to a Euro Truck Simulator, have made their way to the fledgling hardware.
Given the company’s experience developing HD video headgear, it only makes sense that Sony would compete directly with Oculus by producing their own virtual reality headset for the PS4. That way they can give developers a toolkit to create something unique specifically for the machine.
Sony’s VR Headset is expected to be announced at GDC 2014 and followed up with a batch of VR specific games at E3. Given Sony’s recent dedication to indie gamers and making sure fans have a say in the future of the PS4, it’s not hard to see what will happen with this headset. Giving developers of every skill and company size access to millions of players will be a great way to make sure hardware like Oculus Rift is going to have to work double time to keep up.
Details such as pricing and actual availability are missing right not, but the promise of a new gaming paradigm on the PS4 is more than a little exciting.
