Every gamer has a friend that hates*Civilization V — that’s just how it is. The game took the core values of*Civilization and, that*friend would say, made them too simple, too slow, and too boring. After offering to gift you*Civ IV*so you can see “what a real*Civ is like” at no cost, that friend inevitably praises*Civilization Revolution*– the console version, of course — citing it as the proof that a simplified*Civ can be phenomenal, and simplification isn’t the reason why*Civ V is a travesty.
You’ll tell that friend that, yeah, you really liked*Civ Rev on iOS, but they’ll tell you it’s not the same, then both of you give up on the conversation and go back to playing some MOBA. Get ready to resurrect the age-old*Civ argument, because 2K Games*has announced that*Civilization Revolution will be getting a proper sequel, but exclusively for mobile platforms.
Civilization Revolution was the first entry in the franchise that was developed specifically for consoles. Bringing the complex, definitely-requires-a-keyboard-and-mouse series to consoles was always a scary prospect for diehard fans.*Civ*has too many moving parts to be effectively translated to a gamepad; however,*Revolution*turned that notion on its head, showing fans that Civ*can not only work on consoles, but it can become one of the best entries in the series.
The mobile counterpart kept the majority of the core mechanics of the series, but it felt off — it felt more like a*routine than a game. That might’ve been because the mobile game was more or less a translation*from the more robust console version. This time around,*Civilization Revolution 2*is being built from the ground-up, specifically for mobile, so there’s a good chance it’ll feel more like a game than a routine.
As you can see from the screenshots in the above gallery, the game looks significantly better than the first outing. That first attempt released back in 2009,*so it only makes sense that games built for 2014 mobile devices would look much better.
So far, the news is very light on details — especially because it’ll be out on iOS starting July 2. The game is coming to Android as well, but a date other than “coming soon” has not been announced. It doesn’t look like we’ll be getting a proper console release this time around, which is pretty disappointing, but Firaxis has said as much in the past.
For more info on the upcoming sequel, head on over to its website, or you can just wait a week, buy the thing, and be really mad there isn’t a console version.
Putty Churchill.
Knights beat anything so long as they’re on a hill.
The days of your civilization are numbered!
A unit battle.
