Last August Steve Ballmer handed in his 12 month notice as CEO of Microsoft and set in motion the task of finding his successor. They are big shoes to fill due to the size and important role Microsoft as a company continues to play in the tech marketplace. But a successor has been found, and he has come from within the walls of Microsoft.
Satya Nadella is the new CEO of Microsoft, but is by no means new at the company. Rather than go outside for talent, Microsoft has chosen a 22-year veteran in the form of the 46-year-old Nadella.
He started his career at Sun Microsystems before moving to Microsoft in 1992 to work on Windows NT. He’s also worked in R&D for the Online Services Division, been vice president of Microsoft Business Division, and then oversaw Microsoft’s transition to offering cloud tech as president of the Server and Tools Business. Now he’s got the top job and will shape Microsoft’s future.
Nadella won’t be doing that alone, however, as surprisingly Bill Gates has decided to take on a bigger role within his company. While the announcement today includes him stepping down as Chairman, Gates has a new role as Founder and Technology Advisor. He will dedicate more time to Microsoft and “supporting Nadella in shaping technology and product direction.” I wonder how Nadella feels about that?
Microsoft’s future is not an easy one to predict and therefore is a risky proposition for a new CEO. There’s never been more competition for the company, with Google being a key concern and Apple continuing to do well in the increasingly important mobile market.
Steve Ballmer has been Microsoft CEO for the past 14 years, and there’s every possibility Nadella will match that. But your guess is as good as mine as to what role Microsoft will play in the market in the next 5 years, let alone the next 14.
