Anyone who picked up a PS4 at launch knew that the first thing the console needed to do was download and install a system software patch. That introduced a number of features promised by Sony but not otherwise enabled on the machine, and took the software version from 1.0 to 1.50.
Less than a week later and Sony is touting system software update versions 1.51. This latest update is nowhere near as big as the initial 1.51 update, but it is important. Sony hasn’t shared much detail yet, but the update is focused on improving the stability of the system. Once installed you’ll also notice a few minor user interface tweaks, which includes indications as to when a game download and game patch are being downloaded simultaneously.
The PS4 is setup to auto-update its system software when left in standby mode. And with the new version released late yesterday there’s every chance your console may already have performed the required download and be sitting there ready to quickly update next time you power it up.
Just like with the PS3, I expect the system software updates to be released on a regular basis. This early in the lifecycle of a new console there’s bound to be a number of issues appearing as the hardware is used by millions of gamers around the world. Sony’s PS4 support team is going to be kept very busy for the next few months fixing anything that comes up.
Just like with the 1.50 update, you can choose to download the software patch to a USB stick and install it without the need to connect to PSN. In order to do that just visit Sony’s PS4 support website and follow the detailed instructions listed there.
