Sony has been seen as the better of the two next-gen console publishers when it comes to embracing indie game developers. Even as far back as August last year we had already identified nine of the PS4′s most prized indie games.
Another game announced since then used to be called Echoes of Siren, but has been renamed Rime, and it forms a PS4 exclusive. However, it has been revealed that Rime could have been an Xbox One exclusive, if it wasn’t for the fact that Microsoft rejected it.
News of this rejection comes in the form of the Concept Submission document developer Tequila Works submitted to Microsoft, which has since been shared with VGLeaks. The document is dated July 18, 2012.
Here’s Rime’s PS4 teaser trailer to remind you what it looks like.
It reminds me of Ico and Journey, so it makes sense that Sony would have snapped this up. But it seems strange that Microsoft would reject it, especially as such a game would clearly form a nice competitor to those Sony-exclusive games just mentioned.
Unfortunately for Xbox One gamers, it looks as though the pitch was made before Microsoft was really considering indie games as an area they should be concerned about. And if Rime turns out to be a hit, then there’s little doubt Sony will fund a follow up. Is Rime a game Microsoft should have grabbed the rights to? In my view, most definitely.
The budget Tequila Works initially estimated for development was $3 million, which is tiny compared to the cash required for The Last of Us or a Call of Duty project. That also makes it much easier to turn a profit if Tequila produce something a bit special.
