Though the PS4 and Xbox One don’t really have much of a library of desirable titles yet (with the Xbox One having the slight edge if you’re into mech-based first-person shooters), perhaps the most disappointing aspect of Sony’s next-gen console is that the otherwise amazingly well-made DualShock 4 controller is mired by a very bright, intrusive bar of light. You can’t shut it off, and it’s extremely difficult to avoid — the bar is often very noticeable in the reflection on your television, or brightly shines in your eyes if you’re doing the controller-under-chin maneuver while your elbows are on a chair’s armrests. As recently as January, Sony said the light bar will essentially plague us forever. Now, though, the company is changing its tune.
Geoff Keighly tweeted that Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida delivered sweet, merciful news: an upcoming PS4 firmware update will allow gamers to dim the DualShock 4′s incessant light bar.
Initially, Keighly tweeted that the upcoming firmware will offer the ability to completely disable the light bar, but Yoshida himself replied to the tweet and corrected that, actually, the feature would only allow gamers to dim the evil eye.*While the DualShock 4 is perhaps the most comfortable traditional game controller ever invented, the light bar mars the otherwise pristine quality of the overall device.
It’s unfortunate that we won’t be able to completely disable the blue beacon of blinding light, but the option to dim it is vastly superior to what we’ve all been dealing with so far.*The upcoming firmware update will also add a video editor to the PS4, as well as an option to turn off HDCP so you can record gameplay videos through HDMI. Stay tuned for the release date of the update, but until then, rest assured knowing you can finally peel the duct tape off of your DualShock 4.
