A lot of talk surrounding new game releases on next-gen consoles revolves around whether they run at 60fps, are they 720p or 1080p, and how many players they support in multiplayer. We’ve had some disappointments already in those categories, like Tomb Raider running at 30fps on Xbox One compared to nearer 60fps on PS4, or Titanfall being limited to 6v6 multiplayer.
The Order: 1886 is a PS4 exclusive game, and looking at the features mentioned above some players may instantly be disappointed. The game will run at 30fps and a 1080p resolution, and will ship with no multiplayer gameplay whatsoever. But before you jump to the comments to complain, know that this is exactly what developer Ready at Dawn Studios intended.
Ready at Dawn has worked on three God of War games for the PSP and Okami for the Wii before turning its attention to The Order: 1886. Anyone who has seen the game in action will know how (graphically) good it looks, and now during an interview co-founder Ru Weerasuriya has confirmed some of the decisions they took that may raise eyebrows have been done on purpose.
Speaking with German gaming website Play3.de, Weerasuriya explained that while 60fps is the only real choice for first-person shooters and heavy action games, The Order: 1886 is all about the cinematic experience, so they chose to focus on 1080p visuals and a steady 30fps.
As for multiplayer, co-founder Andrea Pessino has confirmed it is not a part of the game. He explains it is a “single player, third person action adventure game.” That will surely surprise many when the trailer portrays a game that looks perfect for 4-player co-op. It may also mean the game gets overlooked by a subset of gamers, which would be a shame.
The Order: 1886 is expected to launch in the third-quarter of this year, and could prove a key title for Sony and the PS4 in the run up to Christmas.
