The image you see above looks like a photograph, and if you had nothing but the image to go on you’d be forgiven for thinking that’s exactly what it is. But it’s actually a painting, and if that’s not unbelievable enough, it’s a painting created with a finger on an iPad.
The digital illustration is the work of a clearly very talented artist by the name of Kyle Lambert. He created it using the iPad app Procreate, which claims to be “the most powerful and intuitive digital illustration app available for iPad.” Now they have a stunning piece of work to back up that claim.
Creating such a photorealistic painting takes more than just talent, though. It also requires a lot of time and hard work. Lambert spent over 200 hours working on Morgan Freeman’s face, and in the process made 285,000 brush strokes. The video below shows a 4-minute timelapse of the creation process.
Lambert’s motivation for creating such a detailed painting was actually the Procreate app itself. Because it offers a 4K canvas size, he wanted to test just how detailed he could get using it. So he started out with Freeman’s general likeness, and then just kept pinching and zooming to add more and more fine detail.
I think he proved beyond a doubt it’s possible to create lifelike paintings most people wouldn’t be able to tell apart from the real thing. If you add in the fact Procreate only costs $5.99, you can see why it managed to win an Apple Design Award and has nearly 3,000 reviews averaging 4.5/5 stars. For everyone else, it’s a piece of work you can refer to next time someone claims tablets are not great for drawing on.
