Philips*doesn’t just make light bulbs, the company has done lots of cool things with LEDs (like those awesome Hue bulbs). Now they’re teaming up with the carpet wizards at Desso to create some of the coolest fuzzy flooring you’ll ever find beneath your feet.
It’s called light transmissive carpet, and Philips says it’s going to change the way people interact with with their indoor environments. Our eyes naturally seek out light, and we’ve got a tendency to look down to figure out where we’re supposed to be walking.*It makes sense, then, to put important movement-related information right under our feet. That’s exactly what Philips and Desso have done.
This goes way beyond merely lighting up to illuminate the path to the emergency exits on a plane, though the carpet can certainly do that. You can see it in action in the header image, where it’s lit up to guide hotel guests to safety.
Theaters could use it to guide moviegoers to their seats while simultaneously reminding them to turn off the ringer on their phones. Never looking up to find where your gate is at the airport: Philips can display it in the carpet so you can concentrate on not stepping on someone else’s feet. Better still, they can update the directions with additional notes about delays.

Airlines could even page you in the carpet — just in case you’ve got your headphones in and can’t hear the call going out over the terminal’s PA system.
At the office of the not-too-distant-future, Philips and Desso could even wire the carpet into your company’s Lync server. When you mark yourself in a meeting, your “please knock” doormat could automatically update to “do not disturb.”
Maybe you could even have it broadcast your current status. Just think of the office shenanigans that’ll ensue if that ever becomes a possibility…
