iOS 7 is set to launch on September 18, just two days before Apple starts shipping the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S. And as is the case with every new generation of hardware, some older iOS devices will grow obsolete thanks to incompatible app updates. But the App Store will now offer a new option to keep your outdated device in the game, reports Engadget.

Attempting to install an app on an iPhone running an older OS version--the iPhone 3GS isn't compatible with iOS 7, for example--will open a prompt showing the last version compatible with your device's firmware. Engadget was able to install a previous version of Instagram to an iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.3.3, thanks to the new setup.
Granted, installing an outdated version of an app will most certainly limit some features, but it's an interesting way for Apple to keep older iOS devices viable. And equally important, developers aren't leaving some device owners in the dark by updating to iOS 7.
