While there had been hope that Sony’s next PS4 firmware update would include support for wireless headphones, since even their own Pulse headphones down’t work on the console yet, it seems likely that Sony plans to use the update to also launch some new audio equipment for your gaming pleasure.
Unless you have a wireless headset that relies on a USB connection to work, you’ve probably noticed that there’s not a ton of choices for wireless audio on the PS4 yet. It was one of those things that got pushed back until after launch, and while we know there’s an update on the way there’s no real launch date for that update.
Retail websites may have accidentally clued us in on how soon that update really is by uploading a new $130 wireless headset that Sony has dubbed the Gold Wireless Stereo Headset.
This reasonably priced and surprisingly nice looking headset contains a 7.1 surround sound system with controls along one of the ear muffs and a collapsible frame for portability. Sony earned themselves quite a bit of attention leading up to the PS4 launch by demonstrating that they were listening to what their users wanted, and this is a fine example of them delivering on that by offering an official headset that helps create an incredibly immersive gaming experience.
If Sony plans on shipping these soon, it seems likely that an update to the PS4 has to be right around the corner. We’ll know for sure soon enough.
