It looks like Nvidia has learned from its mistakes, as a device that could only really be the Shield 2 has turned up at the FCC.
As cool a concept as it was, Nvidia’s fist gaming handheld fell flat on its face. It was bulky, uncomfortable to hold for any length of time, lacked a sufficient number of games that fully used the controller, and was too expensive, especially considering all of these flaws. There was also some launch issues that caused the hardcore fans to take a wait-and-see approach to the device instead of diving right in.
Now that Nvidia is a year wiser and has been spending time with their significantly more flexible K1 platform, it seems like a refresh on the Shield could be happening soon and be received well. A recent FCC filing for a new Nvidia product shows that, at the very least, the company has figured out how to make the controller way better.

Compared to last year’s design, Nvidia has clearly worked hard to make sure the controller actually feels more like a controller. Last year’s attempt was clumsy at best, especially when you needed to hold the console by the screen to use any of the touchscreen games. This new design almost looks like the Xbox One controller in the back, and as long as the rest of the console has improved you can expect a higher quality display and even greater functionality for services like Gamestream, which allow you to play PC games on the device remotely.
As Sony moves to make the PS Vita and the PS4 work together with their PlayStation Now service, Nvidia is the only real competition in the PC market that is shaped like a portable console.
There’s no expected release date for this hardware, but with E3 right around the corner and Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang hinting back in October that a Shield 2 was on the way, it’s hard to imagine the wait being too much longer. Who knows, maybe we’ll even see some cool Oculus Rift support on top of the already impressive list of Shield games. Here’s hoping, right?
