E3 earlier this month was a key event for Nintendo. The Wii U isn’t selling very well and Nintendo as a company is losing money, so E3 was seen as the place to kick things into gear and get hardware selling again (somehow). It therefore came as a bit of a surprise when Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata announced he wouldn’t be attending the show. The reason given was that his doctors has told him not to travel, which sounded serious.
We didn’t hear much more from Iwata over E3, but did see Nintendo give its fans hope with a very strong showing of games. We’re now a couple of weeks on from the event in Los Angeles, and it has been revealed exactly what was wrong with Iwata. It turns out he did have a very good reason not to travel: he was preparing to go under the surgeon’s knife and have a tumor removed.
The 54-year-old Iwata had a growth discovered during a recent routine check up. That growth turned out to be a tumor in his bile duct, which can be very serious if discovered late. Luckily for Iwata his doctors found it early, allowing surgery to take place last week. We are only learning of the procedure now because his recovery is taking longer than expected so he’ll miss a planned shareholders meeting this coming Friday.
We all wish Iwata a very speedy recovery so he can return to the important task of getting Nintendo back on track and competing with the PS4 and Xbox One this coming holiday season.
