We don’t know exactly when it’s coming, but we’ve already gotten a few chances to see what the iPhone 6 will look like. A fresh leak from China shows what looks an awful lot like an iPhone 6 casing, and it closely resembles what we saw in earlier leaks.
In the image at the far right, the leaker has provided us a glimpse at the inside of the casing. The surface is heavily tooled, and presumably those marks were made by a CNC machine. It looks nothing like the clean, super-smooth interior of the iPhones and iPads we’ve seen torn down by iFixit. That means we’re looking at one of two things here.
First, it’s possible that this is a complete fake. It could have been whipped up by any one of the countless Shanzai shops that churn out convincing knockoff devices in China. All they would have needed are the schematics that leaked previously, a competent CAD engineer, and the equipment to machine a small chunk of aluminum.*Then again, it’s also possible that this is an early sample that a manufacturer churned out to make sure their mold matched Apple’s specs. Once things are up to Apple’s standards, a more refined mold would be produced prior to mass production kicking off.
This leak shows the same design changes as the others. The power-wake button has been moved to the side. The volume button cutouts are now oblong — like they are on the iPhone 5C or iPad — instead of circular like the iPhone 5S. The overall look is a little bit iPad mini and a little bit iPhone 5S, and it’s looking considerably slimmer than its predecessor.
That’s got a lot to do with the size. The iPhone 6 is expected to feature a 4.7-inch display, which means a larger housing. Even though it’s skinnier, there’s still at least as much room inside to cram in components.
