Nothing gets tech bloggers bristling quite like an iPhone rumor. The latest in the never-ending saga has reportedly revealed the capacity of the batteries in both the 4.7-inch and 5.5 inch iPhone 6.
So how many mAh is Apple squeezing in? The 4.7 inch will ship with an 1800mAh battery, which is a 15% boost from the iPhone 5S. The 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will get a 2500mAh battery.
Now, some are already pressing the panic button — despite the fact that this is leaked information about unreleased iPhone 6 models that no one has actually used yet. Forbes thinks that the batteries could be a major problem since iPhone users game an average of 14 hours per month. Yet in testing, the iPhone 5S can handle four and a half hours of continuous gaming. It’s hard to imagine a little under 30 minutes of gaming per day really phasing the iPhone 6.
The iPhone has also never plagued by the same battery life rules as Android phones. The iPhone 5S only has a 1440mAh battery, yet it still has plenty of gas for ten hours of typical smartphone use. There’s still a lot of other information we don’t know about the iPhone* that would impact battery life, like how efficient the new processor is and how well-tuned iOS 8 is. Massive gains can come from software tweaks — you only need to look at the massive boost Google has managed with Android L for proof.
Even with larger (and more pixel-dense) displays, the 1800mAh and 2500mAh batteries in the iPhone 6 should provide users with enough power. Apple has managed similar moves with previous generation iPhones, and there’s no reason to believe that they won’t be able to do it again this fall.
