Have your eye on a new iPhone? Walmart is reportedly knocking the price of one of Apple’s new handsets all the way down to $27 with a new contract.
Before you get too excited, this is a deal on the iPhone 5C, not the more premium iPhone 5S. The iPhone 5C usually sells for $99 on contract, but at just $27 it might push some people to trade up. It’s pretty much an impulse buy.
The iPhone 5C is the closest Apple has been able to come to a budget iPhone. It’s essentially a revamped iPhone 5 in a colorful plastic shell (blue, green, pink, yellow, or white). The new iPhone 5S packs features like a fingerprint scanner, improved camera modes, and a faster Apple A7 64-bit ARM chip — the 5C lacks all these.
Apple has reportedly had issues moving the less expensive iPhone and decided to reduce orders for the last few months of the year. Part of the problem could be that it’s more expensive than many people expected — there were rumors of a $200-300 off-contract price going into the announcement.
The oversupply of iPhone 5C devices in the retail channel could be the impetus for this upcoming sale. Even though the hardware is less impressive, $27 is a hard price to pass up. Users updating from an iPhone 4 or 4S would still see big improvements with the 5C.
At the same time, Walmart is going to offer the flagship iPhone 5S with a similar discount. It will be $127, down from $199. It might be the same amount off, but it doesn’t have quite the same draw as an iPhone for just 27 bucks. The deal runs from 8am Friday the 13th to December 24th.
