One of the most brilliant minds in user interaction has just left Disney Research for Motorola’s ATAP lab to create amazing new user experiences.
Easily the most impressive semi-public research team in the mobile industry today is Motorola’s ATAP lab. Lead by ex-DARPA head Regina Dugan, this group is focused on delivering new and innovative experiences to users. Some of these are whimsical and entertaining, like the Windy Day Project and the stories that will follow that experience. Others are more hard-hitting, like the Project ARA modular smartphone. It’s a team of brilliant people that are focused on delivering features are new and interesting. The addition of Poupyrev could benefit ATAP’s projects immensely.
Ivan Poupyrev has a history of user interaction mastery under his belt. After eight years at Sony working on touch displays and haptic feedback tech, he moved on to Disney Research. His most recent accomplishment, Touché, created interactive touch experiences on unusual surfaces like water and smoke. These experiences are translated to entertainment for Disney parks, but the research itself paved new roads for interactive experiences.
There’s no information publicly available regarding what specifically Ivan will be working on with Motorola ATAP, but so far everything that has come from that team has been something impressive. Given their rapid release cycles, it’s possible we may even see something from his work as early as next year, if he isn’t diving in to work on existing projects like the ARA smartphone concept.
