Google’s crazy augmented reality game just received its biggest update yet, sending eager players from both sides of the invisible war for our minds into overdrive.
While it may remain a complicated concept to explain to someone that isn’t playing, Ingress has become a global game with thousands and thousands of players. Having recently completed a massive campaign in the game that involved players working together to establish cross-continental links in order to beat the other side, it’s time for the creators of the game to focus a bit on growth from within.
As the number of players who hit the maximum level in the game continues to rise, there’s only a few places you can go to make sure there are objectives for the more elite players in this global community. With that in mind, Niantic Labs has released a huge update to Ingress today that will no doubt kick off another year of augmented reality combat.
Ingress players from both factions will need to put their collections of power cubes, resonators, and of course XMP bursters out in the world in a big way now that the game has gone from a level 8 cap to a level 16 cap. On top of the new ceiling to reach for, Niantic has removed the limitation on the Ultra Strike weapon, which had previously been reserved as a special item for those who purchased Motorola Droid phones last year.
The Ultra Strike is all about delivering maximum damage in a specific location, which will create new multiplayer opportunities for quickly taking down high level-enemy portals as a group. Also added to the game are Capsules, which are rare items that allow players to store and transport large quantities of items. This makes it possible for local chapters of the same faction to help each other out over larger distances, by providing supplies when they are most needed.
While still and Android exclusive for now, the new Ingress update is available now for all players. Over the next few days you will start to see more and more of these rare weapons and tools show up in your hacks, so be sure to use them wisely.
