Microsoft may not be ready to sell us an Illumiroom setup, but the team at Rockaway Labs has made it possible to enjoy some fun ambient lighting with just a Hue bulb and a smartphone.
Philips has two great things going for them with the Hue bulbs right now, there are several lights to choose from and the developer community is fantastic. The Hue bulbs have a good API and they respond quickly to commands sent from just about everything.
One of the best places for the Hue bulbs is in the living room, because you can change the lighting to suit your activities. You can dim the lights for a little romance, change the color temperature for the optimal reading environment, and even have your lights change with your music.
Huey makes it possible for you to do things a little differently with your Hue bulbs, and there’s a big opportunity here to have some fun.
With a Hue bulb behind the TV and a smartphone pointed at the screen, you can create ambient lighting that plays along with whatever you are watching or playing on the screen. This isn’t the most efficient setup ever, especially since you need to have the phone or tablet running constantly in order to keep the lights working, but it’s a lot of fun to play with.
If your living room supports a way to have the camera pointed at the screen and plugged in while you’re watching something, you can have a whole movie or gaming session with ambient lighting all around.
Huey is a free app in the Google Play Store, so check it out for yourself!
