March 25 is still a little while away, but the HTC M8 is showing off more of its outer shell every day. It now looks like this phone will be mostly based on the HTC One design, but there’s more than enough changes to make this feel like a unique experience.
The HTC One was a big deal because its design broke the mold a bit. The the almost entirely aluminum frame, the speakers on the front, and a unique Ultrapixel camera that delivered surprisingly great results, the One just felt like a well made phone. Still, it wasn’t without its faults. The plastic seam that ran along the outer rim of the phone often appeared to have gaps between the aluminum and the plastic (and if you didn’t have that problem when you bought the phone you most assuredly had it after you dropped the One for the first time).
Thanks to leaks provided to Geek.com, we’ve got a look at the top of the HTC M8 along with some details surrounding the rest of the phone that set it apart from the HTC One.
The top of this phone is significant because it is the largest concentration of plastic on the entire phone. There will be no plastic seam going around the outer rim of the M8 like there is on the One. The only other place you will find plastic is the two strips across the back. HTC has figured out how to eliminate the excess plastic but maintain radio strength.
You can also see that the power button is on the right side of the phone, where previously it had been on the left. The headphone jack doesn’t appear in this image at all, so it is most likely on the bottom of the phone next to the micro USB port.
According to our source, HTC has not yet landed on a name for the HTC M8, but the most common name applied to it currently is the HTC One. This has been recently corroborated by notorious leaker EVLeaks.
If HTC keeps the same name as the predecessor to the M8 — instead of calling it the HTC One 2 or something silly like that — it would allow them to create a line of yearly updated hardware under a single banner. That way they would have the One line and the Desire line of phones.
Regardless of what it is called, this phone will be arriving in five colors. You’ll be able to purchase the HTC M8 in the bright aluminum the One was originally released in, as well as a darker aluminum or gun metal shade, gold, red, and blue. Aside from ditching the all black version, it’s not totally different from what its available for the One right now.
HTC will be officially unveiling this phone during a press event in London and New York on March 25, where we’ll learn all about this strange dual camera system and what HTC has in store for the next generation of their hardware. From what is shown here and in all of the other leaks we’ve seen so far, especially with the new HTC Advantage loyalty program on the way, it looks like HTC is about to knock it out of the park again.
