Android By Lee Mathews Jan. 15, 2014 12:00 pm
More than two years have passed since HP last launched a smartphone. The ill-fated Pre 3 went on sale in the UK back in August of 2011. Now they’re ready to get back in the game with the Slate 6.
It’s a massive Android phablet — not quite as big as the Sony Xperia Z Ultra mind you, but still very close to tablet territory with its 6-inch display. The Slate 6 is also quite a head-turner, with a patterned back reminiscent of the Nexus 4 and metallic gold trim around its sides and rear-facing camera.
While the Slate 6 has a high-end (or gauche, depending on your taste) look, its hardware is anything but. That 6-inch panel boasts a modest 1280 x 720 resolution with a density of around 244ppi. It’s also expected to ship with a quad-core Marvell PXA1088 processor clocked at 1GHz.
It won’t be a speed demon, if it’s anything like the Samsung Galaxy Win. It, too, featured a PXA1088 chip when it launched in February of 2013, and the processor hasn’t gotten any faster since then. The rear-facing camera relies on a humble 5MP sensor, and it’s paired with a 2MP front-facing unit.
The Slate 6 isn’t particularly svelte. Though it’s smaller than the Xperia Z Ultra, it’s also about 3mm thicker. On the upside, the Slate 6 does come with dual SIM slots and it’s expected to sell for a little under $200. It may not, however, ever go on sale here in the West.
HP CEO Meg Whitman says that the company is targeting India — and perhaps China — with the Slate 6. Their mobile markets are booming and HP has good brand recognition in both regions. It’s a good way for the company to break back into the smartphone market.
One thing HP might want to do before the Slate 6 goes on sale is touch up these marketing images. On the original full-resolution pics you can clearly see that they’ve misspelled time and mail.
