If you’ve been purchasing and returning a few apps on Google Play recently, you may have noticed it’s possible to get a refund well beyond the 15 minute time limit. That’s because Google has unofficially been extending the return period to a couple of hours. However, this week the refund period has been officially set at 2 hours.
From now on, any app or game you purchase through Google Play can be returned for a full refund within 120 minutes. Just simply select the app you purchased in the My Apps section and click the Refund option. If it’s been more than 2 hours the Refund button will be replaced with an Uninstall option. You also can’t get a refund if you already purchased a particular app and had it refunded before. That’s clearly been done to stop people repeatedly purchasing and refunding the apps they like to bypass paying for them.
The new policy of two hour refunds could have a significant knock-on effect for developers. There are thousands of apps out there that probably won’t hold your interest for the entire refund period. For example, the percentage of people who have sat there and played Flappy Bird for more than 15 minutes is going to be small, but now they’ve got 120 minutes to become thoroughly bored with it.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. App developers will need to add value to their apps and games to make you want to play them for more than 2 hours, or at least, want to return to them later and therefore not be tempted to request a refund. Will this mean overall quality will improve? Hopefully.
