Google Glass owners who also have prescription lenses have been hunting for a solution that keeps their $1,500 computer on their face and still allows them to see the world. The Wetley GGRX frames are the first of their kind, offering a snap-in frame solution for $99.
While you can tweak the nose bridge to fit over a small pair of prescription lenses, Google Glass was clearly not designed with the visually impaired in mind. We know that they have been working on a solution for that which involves replacing the titanium bridge with one that contains frames, but there’s been no pricing or date of arrival mentioned so far. It’s up to third party folks to step up their game and offer what they think is best. The guys at OpticsPlanet are the first up to the plate with the Wetley GGRX frames.
For $99, you get a snap-in frame that matches the color of the titanium band your Glass already has. It looks like one solid piece at a distance, but up close you can see that these frames aren’t really supposed to be there. Their base model allows you to supply whatever lenses you like by just going to your regular optometrist, but they do offer lenses as well. There are sunglasses and prescription sunglasses available as well, but all of them are contained within the exact same frame.
As far as style goes, you’re obviously limited here. While these guys are certainly here first, there’s a multiple-week delay in shipping right now according to OpticsPlanet. Meanwhile,*the guys at Rochester Optical have been claiming to have multiple frames and styles available after CES, but there hasn’t been photos or even renders of how that setup will look and feel. OpticsPlanet, on the other hand, has several great photos and video to demonstrate how their third-party Glass accessory will work.
If you’re ready to order, you can head over to the OpticsPlanet site and do so now. If you’re eager to see what the competition has to offer instead of dropping the $100 right now, it may be worth the wait.
