There’s no shortage of things happening in the technology world this week, so join us as we talk with Android Central’s Phil Nickinson to add some color to these topics. Welcome to Geekout!
If you haven’t read it yet, our Mario Kart 8 review is live, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s one of the best games for the Wii U. Nintendo did exactly what they needed to do, and it’s entirely likely that the game will be one of very few that actually sells consoles for Nintendo. With a special bundle for Mario Kart 8 on the way and a huge bonus right now adding your choice of additional digital download for free, there’s no real reason not to get the console if you’re a fan of Nintendo’s IP.
It’s been a big week for inexpensive, small devices. The HTC One Mini 2, Motorola Moto E, and Xiaomi Mi Pad have all been announced this week, and each of them offers something unique. The $129 Moto E will reset the bar for budget phones, and despite looking like a chubby Moto X it’s got a decent bit of style to it as well.
Meanwhile, HTC is trying to add a little bit of high end flash to the budget market One Mini 2. It’s got the same casing as the One M8, but loses the Duo Camera and touch gestures in exchange for a 5MP front facing camera and (hopefully) a lower price tag. Finally, the first Tegra K1 tablet has been announced in China for a stunning $240. The Xiaomi Mi Pad impressive 7.9-inch display with what looks like plenty of battery life, but so far there’s no way to know this is ever going to be available outside of China.
Our app of the week is Monument Valley, which is now available for Android after spending some time as an iOS exclusive. Monument Valley is an incredible puzzle game with a unique art style and no shortage of immersive music. The game is short, but the puzzles are complex enough that the game feels complete by the time you reach the last level. It’s well worth the $3.99 you’ll pay on the Google Play Store, so check it out.
