Whether you’re back at work (like us) or sitting on your couch surrounded by empty egg nog containers and a migraine that is pounding to the exact rhythm of Jingle Bells, it’s time for our weekly Geekout session!
While 2013 ends any remaining open programs and prepares to update to the latest version, we took a few minutes to talk about our Christmas experiences and some fun things in the world of technology. It’s a little more laid back than our usual Geekout sessions, which are already fairly laid back to begin with, but we invite you to join all the same.
We don’t mean to call anyone out or anything, but the Xbox One is on the large side. It’s significantly bigger than the PS4, which has remarkably similar hardware inside. In fact, a causal glance under the hood shows that there really is just a spectacularly large amount of open space in the console. Microsoft made absolutely sure that these consoles couldn’t over heat unless you were intentionally abusing the system, and as a result there’s a lot of extra plastic and space. So much, in fact, that one clever user turned the console into a laptop using a 22-inch monitor and the excess plastic from the casing. It’s a one of a kind system, and it has already been sold to an anonymous source, but to imagine it is possible to shrink that hulking mass of plastic down into the size of a large laptop is a little on the crazy side. Hopefully there’s no heating issues.
There’s a pair of apps this week for our App of the Week, one for productivity and one for fun. The first is Colossatron, which is now available for iOS and Android. The guys at HalfBrick, makers of Fruit Ninja, have put together a rails shooter involving giant mechanized snakes and tanks. It’s $0.99 on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store, and is all but guaranteed to consume an afternoon with fun times.
You should also check out Cover if you’re on Android, which is a free lock screen replacement that has been in Beta for some time now. This app does a great job of making it easy to unlock your phone into specific apps, and works remarkably well on phones and tablets alike. It’s very easy to setup and is well worth the cost of admission.
