Just the other day we were talking about the next generation of touch-enabled PCs being convertible slates, like the Microsoft Surface 2 Pro or Dell Venue 11 Pro, and now we’ve got a killer deal on a last generation convertible laptop. Unlike the hot stuff slates hitting the market today, the XPS 12 from Dell has a permanent clamshell chassis that converts to let you use the display as a slate.
Built around a 12.5-inch screen, the unique chassis found in the XPS 12 allows the screen to rotate a full 360 degrees inside its own frame. This is unlike the Lenovo Yoga laptops, where the entire LCD top cover rotates around the base. Both are good solutions to getting a slate-only form factor out of a normal laptop chassis, ensuring easy to access to a real laptop keyboard at any time.
This little beauty packs 1920×1080 pixels into a tiny 12.5-inch display with IPS and multi-touch tech baked in and covered in a layer of Gorilla Glass for scratch protection. While there are newer models available with the Haswell chips, this killer discount is on a 2012 model with the 3rd gen Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor. You also get 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, the latter of which is rare in 2013 model convertible laptops at this price point.
Ultraportable is an understatement for this model, with its featherweight measurements at 0.59-0.79 inches thin and 3.35 lbs. Despite it’s abundance of compactness, you still get two USB 3.0 ports, Mini DisplayPort output, and an HD webcam. The other usual goodies like Wireless-N and Bluetooth 4.0 are standard.
