Thanks to advancements in both hardware and software, buying a tablet no longer means you have to sacrifice the environment, apps, and overall experience you get with your main PC. Late 2013 brought us a number of slate tablets powered by new Intel Atom processors that have enough performance to run the full version of Windows 8 and are power thrifty enough to live in an 8-inch tablet.
Lenovo’s first-gen Miix tablet was a popular option in 2013 and they’ve quickly turned around the updated Miix 2, rocking a quad-core Atom processor, 8-inch HD screen, and 32GB or 64GB of storage. The display uses IPS technology for extra-wide viewing angles and rich colors, a very nice inclusion to see on a budget-priced machine.
Dual cameras are built-in, with the front-facing 2MP shooter being ideal for video conferencing and using the Veriface face recognition software to quickly get access to your PC/tablet without having to type in a password. One of the cooler accessories for the Miix 2 is a magnetic fold-back cover that includes a capacitive stylus and built-in slot for the stylus, available in black, blue, and pink.
The port selection is understandably slim compared to a laptop, yielding you microUSB, microSD, microSIM, and audio output ports built into the 0.3-inch, 0.77 lbs chassis. A nice extra bonus is you do get the full version of MS Office 2013 Home & Student 2013, which will save you an extra $100 if you don’t have one of those multi-device Office 365 subscriptions.
This model only recently went on sale on the web and you can get the 32GB version for just $249.99 from Best Buy, $50 less than direct from Lenovo. If the 64GB version is more your speed, Lenovo has it for $339 after a $100 coupon.
