Samsung’s throwing more tablet spaghetti at the wall in their never-ending quest to see what sticks. The Galaxy Tab 3 Lite is coming soon, and it’s aimed at the most frugal of tablet shoppers.
Bearing in mind that the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3 currently sells for around $169, the Lite version ought to hit the streets much closer to the $100 mark. Judging by what’s been revealed so far, that definitely seems like a possibility.
At this point, specs for the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite are a little sketchy. A retailer in Poland jumped the gun and has already added a product listing to its website that notes the same 7-inch, 1024 by 600 pixel as the Tab. It also reports the same 1.2GHz dual-core Marvell PXA986 processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of NAND storage.
Roll in the fact that it also shows the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite as shipping with Android 4.2, and it sure seems like they’ve simply taken the specs from the Galaxy Tab 3 and pasted them in under a new model with a different price tag.
Then again, the battery capacity is listed at 3600mAh — a 10% drop from the Galaxy Tab 3′s 4000mAh unit. That alone wouldn’t be enough to justify adding another model to a product line (even for Samsung), but it has been six months since the Gaalxy Tab 3 went on sale.
With Mobile World Congress coming up, it’s possible that Samsung is preparing a modest spec bump (possibly featuring Intel processors) for the original and re-using the old guts in a new model.
Even though the Galaxy Tab 3 is relatively cheap at $169, Samsung doesn’t have anything that comes close to the $100 Asus MeMO Pad. With last year’s guts and a smaller battery, the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite would do the trick.
