Dong Nguyen, the creator of the original Flappy Bird, decided his super addictive game should no longer be available to purchase and download after it started racking up tens of thousands of downloads a day. So he removed it from the App Store. That spurned many a clone game, so many in fact, that both Apple and Google started rejecting them. But now there’s a new version of the game, and one that can never be removed from an app store.
Flappy Bird in a Box or Flappy Bird IRL, which look to be its two official names, is a real life, physical version of Flappy Bird that exists inside a box. It was created by Fawn Qiu, founder of MakeAnything–a technology kit community focused on encouraging the use of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to make stuff.
Flappy Bird in a Box is a great example of that “you can make anything” mentality. It was developed using an Arduino, two servo motors, reed switches, magnets, and of course some cardboard. You can see it in action below:
If the project seems familiar to you, it’s probably because this isn’t the first time such a game has been put together inside a box. Back in 2011, Teague Labs created a side-scrolling Mario game in a box using similar parts.
Just like the original, this physical version of the game is hard, just as infuriating to play, and therefore probably just as addictive. Even creator Qiu only has a high score in the single digits.
