Despite years of workarounds, emulators, virtual machines, and outdated tweaks to your system, Netflix on Linux is still one of those things that is a constant struggle for some users. It looks like those days are finally behind us, fellow Linux users, as you can now watch Netflix on Ubuntu with no more effort than using the Chrome browser.
At long last, there are no tricks, hacks, tutorials, or anything else needed in order to watch Netflix on Linux. You just use Chrome, go to the Netflix website, and enjoy. You must be using 12.04 LTS, 14.04 LTS, or later as well as Chrome version 37 or higher in order for this to work, but there really is nothing else going on here. Canonical and Netflix came to an agreement where the user agent being used in this configuration is all you need to start watching content, and the experience is identical to what you would get elsewhere.
The most common argument you hear against stuff like streaming video and gaming on Linux is piracy, and despite a dozen ways to counter that argument, it never seems to go away. While it’s a simple step forward, native Netflix on Linux*is one of those things that opens the doors to competing services and paves the way for more of this kind of content to exist in Linux without reservation or hesitation.
