One of the negatives of both the PS4 and Xbox One is the fact that they don’t feature backwards compatibility with last generation hardware. It simply isn’t possible because both machines have moved to different architectures. However, that hasn’t stopped backwards compatibility being falsely advertised in an attempt to break as many Xbox One consoles as possible.
As a prank, fake instructions have been created and posted on 4chan detailing how to unlock Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on an Xbox One. The instructions present the feature as available, but disabled without explaining why. The problem is, the instructions given to enable it end up bricking your Xbox One.
Here’s the instructions you definitely should not under any circumstances follow as it will not enable backwards compatibility:
Really Microsoft shouldn’t allow its console to be bricked so easily, with the culprit being the not fully implemented feature of turning your Xbox One into a development unit. Microsoft is telling everyone not to do this to their console, but if it carries on being an issue they may end up pushing an update to stop it working/bricking machines.
The reason why gamers are using the instructions is going to be some combination of frustration, lack of knowledge, and let’s face it, a bit of stupidity. I’m not surprised many casual gamers just expect backwards compatibility to be a thing and get confused when their Xbox 360 games don’t boot on the new machine. But at the same time, anyone following unofficial instructions found on the Internet is just asking for trouble.
If you know someone who has an Xbox One, but at the same time isn’t exactly knowledgeable when it comes to how the hardware functions, do them a favor and explain this is a hoax before they brick their box.
