A female tourist visiting Australia has put a new spin on taking a long walk off a short pier. She plunged straight into chilly waters of Port Phillip Bay — in a move reminiscent of the girl who fell into the shopping mall fountain while texting.
According to the Victoria Police, the woman was so intent on checking Facebook that she was completely unaware that she was approaching the end of St. Kilda pier. At around 11:30pm on Monday evening she toppled into the Bay, and fortunately for her there were witnesses who quickly alerted the Water Police.
Not only was this particular tourist completely unaware of her surroundings — she also reportedly couldn’t swim. Fortunately for her, Port Philip is quite shallow for the most part, and she wound up just 60 feet away from the pier where she was quickly rescued and taken to a local hospital.
Fear not, tech-savvy Geek readers: she didn’t lose her phone. Leading Senior Constable Julie-Anne Newman happily reported that the woman clung tightly to her precious mobile during the ordeal.
It’s actually kind of amazing that she didn’t drop it. You’d think that the panic of falling unexpectedly into the water — and knowing that you can’t swim — might have caused her hand to unclench. Then again, maybe she figured her chances of staying afloat weren’t any worse if she held on because she didn’t know how to swim anyway.
Hopefully the authorities chucked it into a bag of rice for her. No doubt she wanted to get back on Facebook and update her wall so that everyone knew she was fine. Then again, maybe she decided to hold off until Facebook introduces that sympathize button.
