For years, smartphone fans have railed against the concept of carrier-based exclusives. We live in a world where these exclusives happen significantly less often, and most of the launches we’ve seen in the last two years have been dismal failures, but that’s not going to stop Verizon from giving it another shot. Just like last year, it seems Verizon and Motorola are working together to release a Droid-branded powerhouse. Unlike last year, however, the Droid Turbo is far from being a clone of the Moto X.
Last year Verizon and Motorola dropped a trio of Droid-branded phones that were all strikingly similar to the Moto X, but this year it looks like things have changed. It seems there will only be one phone in the Droid lineup from Motorola this year, and it’s quite different from the 2014 Moto X.
While Motorola stuck with unassuming specs and impressive software for their flagship, the Droid Turbo is all flash and horsepower. This beast is packing a 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 5.2-inch 2560×1440 resolution display. With a 3,900mAh battery that Verizon claims will get you two days of battery life, and 21MP camera hiding in the back, this is everything you could hope for in a high end smartphone on paper.
Smartphones can’t survive on hardware alone in the smartphone world, and it looks like Verizon is taking this opportunity to improve their Droid Zap software that’s on top of the existing Motorola features. You’ll be able to take advantage of all the same Motorola voice and display features from the Moto X 2014, and included in that is the ability to give Zap commands through voice. This means you’ll be able to share files with other Droid Zap users and even send files to your Chromecast with just your voice.
This is an impressive offering from Verizon if the leaks pan out, and it looks like we’ll see the official unveil in about two weeks, so there isn’t long to wait. Curiously, this superphone is being announced just after Google will announce the next version of Android, which means there’s going to be plenty of people asking when updates will happen. As long as Verizon doesn’t drop the ball with updates, this could easily be the best phone on Verizon Wireless for the foreseeable future.
