If others follow the lead of Samsung and LG, 2014 may turn out to be the year of the curved-screen smartphone.*More importantly, it’ll be the year of the bacteria-free phone once Corning’s new Gorilla Glass gets slapped onto display panels.
You might remember reading about Corning’s latest and greatest last year. In July, they gave us a brief glimpse at what to expect. Now, they’ve headed to the CES convention floor and posted a new YouTube video that offers a little more insight.*The new Glass owes its bacteria-fighting abilities to a fine layer of silver ions. That’s a trick that’s been used before to keep smartphones from harboring unwanted germs, and it’s a welcome update to an already awesome product.
Instead of just shrugging off scratches and withstanding accidental drops (some of them, anyway), Gorilla Glass can now shrug off the unpleasant microbes hiding out on our filthy mitts. Corning says it can kill 99.9% of bacteria, and that claim has been verified by the EPA.
That’s not the only improvement Corning has made to Gorilla Glass. The new-and-improved version also fights off glare. While a phone that isn’t as disgusting as the average toothbrush under a microscope sounds good, one that you can use without straining your eyes in direct sunlight is even better.*”A number” of manufacturers are already testing out the new Gorilla Glass, and it’s hard to imagine anyone not making the switch for their 2014 flagship phones. It’s also going to find its way onto tablets, laptops, medical devices, high-end calculators, and just about anything else with a touchscreen in the very near future.
